Telepsychiatry

Technology Overview
Telepsychiatry relies on secure video conferencing to facilitate a real-time, face-to-face interaction between clinician and patient when the two are housed in seperate locations.

InSight is a provider of clinical services, and does not sell technology; however, InSight has been working within this field since 1999 and has developed a high comfort level with videoconferencing technology.  This experience and expertise is available to our partners in helping each facility choose the most appropriate technology solution for their telepsychiatry needs.

InSight’s own televideo network is built on Cicso’s Tandberg equipment, long-considered a gold standard in secure videoconferencing solutions.  InSight’s network is centralized around our telepsychiatry core, which is a set of centralized servers that serve to authenticate and encrypt each transmission in order to ensure the integrity of the video link.  InSight’s televideo systems can bridge both ISDN and IP network connections.

Televideo equipment today is built around an extraordinarily simple user interface so that day to day users do not need to be very technology savvy.  InSight offers both training and IT support for the televideo connections, however it is always important that each site designate a specific onsite point of contact for any unforeseen IT issues.  Most IT issues with the televideo equipment can easily be resolved through simple trainings seminars resulting in familiarity and comfort in capably working with the equipment.

While the enabling technology for telepsychiatry is growing more prevalent and more affordable, users should note that not all video conferencing solutions can support HIPAA compliance, and that telepsychiatry should only be performed through technology and transmission lines with high levels of encryption and reliability.
