Office of Telemedicine and Department of Psychiatric Medicine
The UVA Office of Telemedicine has long been a pioneer and international leader in telemedicine. It launched its first telemedicine program in 1994 with a mission to provide excellence and innovation in specialty medical care and distance learning to under served regions. Through its program, the clinical specialties of the UVA Health System have been made available throughout Virginia and many regions of the world. Services range from clinical consultations, medical education for providers and patients, and many outreach projects occurring locally and internationally.
The Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences of the University of Virginia School of Medicine, in partnership with the UVA Office of Telemedicine, began its first telepsychiatry program 1998 and now provides excellent mental health care throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia through this medium and network of more than 85 sites located throughout Virginia. Physicians in the Department are all board certified and specialize in either adult, child/adolescent, forensic, geriatric, or addiction psychiatry. Our Ph.D., LSCW, LPC, and Nurse Practitioner faculty are certified by their respective agencies.
In addition to telepsychiatry, the Office of Telemedicine has also worked within the following specialties: cardiology, dermatology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, gynecology, hepatology, high risk OB, infectious disease, nephrology, neurology, pediatric cardiology, pediatric orthopedics, retinopathy, urology, wound care, childhood obesity, dentistry, ENT, hematology, neurosurgery, nutrition, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, pain management, plastic surgery, pulmonology, surgery, thoracic cardiovascular surgery, toxicology and transplant.
InSight and The University of Virginia have formed a partnership to further increase access to psychiatric care within Virginia by combining the clinical expertise and capacity of UVA’s telepsychiatry program with InSight’s existing telepsychiatry models.
