Telepsychiatry for Suicide Watch Assessment

While it is generally a simple process to place an inmate on suicide watch, many correctional facilities find that the timely removal of suicide watch when clinically appropriate can be challenging, particularly within smaller facilities that may only have psychiatric staff onsite once or twice per week.  Many facilities report 1:1 suicide watches that can extend up to a week, when it may have been clinically appropriate to reduce the level of evaluation far sooner.

Though always a high risk clinical situation, InSight’s telepsychiatry systems can offer rapid access to the highest level of professional available to assess the mental health of an inmate, a psychiatrist.  Through telepsychiatry, a clinically validated method, correctional facilities can now have expedient access to psychiatric clinicians who can conduct a direct interview with the inmate in order to assess that individual’s capacity to safely return to the general population.

Through telepsychiatry, InSight can provide smaller facilities the same access to care that a larger facilities enjoy in a very cost-effective manner.  InSight’s psychiatric specialists are highly trained and experienced in providing quality services in a time-sensitive manner within correctional facilities.

Driven by a mission to increase access to care, InSight Telepsychiatry focuses on providing services to augment our partner’s existing system of on-site care. Our partners find this particularly valuable when staffing after-hours, weekend, or holiday shifts with on-site psychiatrists. InSight offers alternative solutions by making psychiatrists available as needed via real time televideo connections. Our doctors become part of our partner’s medical staff and work collaboratively with the onsite clinical team to quickly determine the most appropriate treatment solution for each consumer. InSight’s telepsychiatrists offer services on a consistent and routine basis for scheduled services like initial assessments and medication management of an ongoing case load of consumers.
