Telepsychiatry for Suicide Watch Assessment

While it is generally a simple process to place an inmate on suicide watch, many correctional facilities find that the timely removal of suicide watch when clinically appropriate can be challenging, particularly within smaller facilities that may only have psychiatric staff onsite once or twice per week.  Many facilities report 1:1 suicide watches that can extend up to a week, when it may have been clinically appropriate to reduce the level of evaluation far sooner. 

Though always a high risk clinical situation, InSight’s telepsychiatry systems can offer rapid access to the highest level of professional available to assess the mental health of an inmate, a psychiatrist.  Through telepsychiatry, a clinically validated method, correctional facilities can now have expedient access to psychiatric clinicians who can conduct a direct interview with the inmate in order to assess that individual’s capacity to safely return to the general population.
